Barcelona Suite I
Alvar Suñol Munoz-Ramos (Spanish, 1935-)
Lithograph, signed in pencil, numbered XX of 185
Alvar Suñol Munoz-Ramos - referred to simply as "Alvar"- is one of the few living modernist painters. He was born in Catalonia in a small fishing village outside Barcelona. In the 1960's his work was shown in Paris alongside other Spanish artists such as Miro, Dali and Picasso. In 1963, Alvar produced his first original lithographs - an artform for which he would become known. He has exhibited around the world and his works are held in prestigious private and public collections.
The "Barcelona Suite" typifies Alvar's work of the late 1970s, when embossing on white space becomes a signature aspect of his work. The Suite has two lithographs devoted to Las Ramblas, Barcelona's long walkway famous for its flower stalls; two devoted to Gaudí; and two devoted to the Sardana, a traditional Catalan circle dance. These works display in abundance the symbols that will become the hallmark of Alvar's work - the dove, the flute, the flowers, the lace and the face.
