Tête en ABCD.
James Coignard, (French, 1925-2008)
Original aquaprint with carborundum, signed by hand, numbered 10/75. Expertly framed with museum-quality glass (UV protection and anti-glare finishing). 1977.
James Coignard is a painter, ceramic artist, sculptor and writer born in 1925 in France. He was greatly influenced by his friend Henri Goetz who pioneered the carborundum collagraph printing method in the 1950s. Carborundum is an abrasive originally used to sand lithography stones, but is deployed in collagraph prints to create gradients of tone and a sandy texture. The carborundum adheres to the plate allowing the ink to coalesce around it.
Coignard produced numerous pieces and left behind an immense body of work. His work has been shown in museums and galleries around the world.
