Norval Morrisseau, RCA, Order of Canada (Canadian, 1931-2007)
Norval Morrisseau, an Anishnabe artist born at Sandy Point Reserve in Ontario, is considered the father of the Woodland School and by many as the artist primarily responsible for the surge in interest in Indigenous art in Canada in recent decades. Norval's characteristic style incorporates colourful, figurative images bounded by think black lines. Morrisseau's work explores traditional Anishnabe themes of spirituality and connection to the natural world. Here, the broken circle formed by the two trout (a symbol of abundance) are both a marker of interconnectedness bounding the central womblike image - a powerful symbol of fertility - and of duality: light and dark, day and night, good and evil.
Provenance : acquired at auction by Bohaus Art. "Images of Myths" appears at page 172 of The Art of Norval Morrisseau (1979) and other prints in this series have appeared at auction at reputable auction houses.
