Antoni Tàpies (Spanish 1923-2012)
Etching and embossing on woven paper. Signed and numbered "HC" in pencil. Edition of 75. Certificate of Authenticy.
A protégé of Joan Miro and associate of Salvador Dali, Antoni Tàpies was a leading figure in the Art Informel movement that emerged in Spain in the latter part of the 20th century. The artist is also known for his political opposition to the facist dictatorship of General Franco in the 1970's.
Tàpies' work is enormously varied, but here we see the direct influence of Marcel Duchamp, father of conceptualism in modern art, as he transforms a mundane object of little significance into an image latent with meaning. Like Duchamp's famous urinal, Tàpies' scissors are decontextualized and transformed - becoming a focus of aesthetic appreciation driven by texture and tension between clean lines and the chaos of Tàpies' etched scribbles, the image infused with great metaphorical potential.
