Considered by many to be among the founders of the minmalist and conceptual art movements, Sol LeWitt was an American artist best known for his wall drawings and ‘’structures’’. He worked in a wide range of media including printmaking, photography, drawing and painting, Twelve Forms Derived from a Cube consists of 48 images that testify to Lewitt's profound interest in the idea of repetition and series and his exhaustive exploration of the potential of geometric form. In this series, all of the shapes were created by dividing the sides of the basic cube into halves, thirds, and quarters and connecting the resulting dividing points by lines.
Lewitt's work is held by leading museums around the world and he is undoubtedly one of the most important artists of the twentieth century.
