Jimmy Ernst (German-American, 1920-1984)
Lithograph, signed in pencil and numbered "H.C." (hors commerce) from an edition of 75. Newly framed.
While Jimmy Ernst's early work was initially heavily informed by the surrealist influences of his famous father Max Ernst, he has become primarily associated with the American abstract expressionist movement. In the late 1940's he was a prominent member of the "Irascible Eighteen" along with de Kooning, Pollock, Rothko and other luminaries. In the 1960s and 1970s Ernst moved to Sedona, Arizona where he was inspired by Native American culture and began to incorporate Native American symbols into his compositions. From this perspective, the title "Tierra Incognita" on work likely from this period and likely featuring such a symbol at its centre, takes on new meaning - and irony.
In addition to the bird-like symbol at the centre of the piece, Bohaus Art is drawn to the contrast between clean blue geometric lines superimposed over the swirling cacophony of oranges and reds that make up the background of this striking work.
Ernst's work has been shown at MoMA, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum and is held in prominent collections around the world.
