High and Lifted Up as the Shaman Calls out to the Spirit (2016)
Christian Morrisseau (Canadian, 1969-)
Acrylic on canvas; signed in syllabics lower left, signed lower right, titled and dated verso.
This work is an example of the Woodland School of Art. Norval Morrisseau is considered to be the founder of the Woodland School and Christian Morrisseau is Norval's son. Norval Morrisseau was the first Ojibwa to break the tribal rules of setting down native legends in picture form, and was originally criticized for disclosing traditional spiritual knowledge. However, his unique style gained traction in the late 1960s, revitalizing traditional Ahnisnabae icons and inspiring generations of artists to follow. Christian Morrisseau's work sells regularly at auction and prices for a work of comparable dimensions have ranged as high as $6500 in 2016.
