Robert Furber was an horticulturalist, author, and businessman active in Britain in the first half of the 18th century. He is best known for Twelve Months of Flowers, published in 1730. The book was the first illustrated seed catalogue published in England and featured 400 different flowering species in twelve detailed engravings of seasonal plants in bloom. The engravings were produced by Henry Fletcher based on paintings by Flemish artist Pieter Casteels.
This print is featured in Twelve Months of Flowers for the month of September. The original of "September" is held by the Colonial Williamsburg Museum in Virginia and this work bears a watermark from the museum beneath the matting. For more information, see Furber's Flowers.
