George Braques (1882-1963), French
Original color lithograph from the pages of Derrière Le Miroire n° 166, published in 1967. Framed.
This lithograph is taken from Derrière le Miroir ("DLM"). DLM is a French art magazine created by the famous Maeght art gallery in Paris. The magazine was created in October 1946 (n°1) and published without interruption until 1982 (n°253). Its original articles and illustrations (mainly original color lithographs by the gallery artists) were famous at the time and many editions have become rare collectors' items.
Georges Braque was a major 20th-century French painter known for his contributions to the Fauvism movement and the role he played in the development of Cubism. Braque's work between 1908 and 1912 is closely associated with that of his colleague Pablo Picasso.
Braque's work often features the motif of the bird in flight which "provides both a poignant reflection on a life's work that concentrated on space and movement in space as well as the impending release of the spirit from its mortal bounds."
