Pascal Cucaro was an American painter based in San Francisco who came to prominence in the counter-cultural scene of 1960's California. There, he was associated with the artists and writers of the Beat movement. He is best known for his portraits as well as his depiction of circus scenes, café interiors and streetscapes. His style was known for the thick application of oil paint and the occasional impressionist- like qualities of his depictions. This piece is striking in its ability to convey the mood and character of the man. Cucaro's work appears regularly at auction.
