Born in Glasgow the son of shoe maker, Murray became a very successful landscape painter and was knighted in 1917 in recognition of his contribution to the arts. While the landscape (or in this case the manor house) is the focus for his work, an indistinct figure often appears in his works. That sketched figure (or figures) injects a feeling that the artist has captured a specific moment in time and reminds the viewer of the relationship between the built or natural landscapes and their human inhabitants. Murray's work is often available at auction.
