Arlequin Musicien
Roger Bezombes (1913-1994, French),
Signed and numbered 132/220, Unframed
Roger Bezombes was an extremely popular French painter, sculptor, and designer through the mid-twentieth century. His painting is heavily influenced by Henri Matisse's bold colours, as well as by an abiding interest in Mediterranean and North African themes. Bezombes exhibited across France and internationally and his work is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as in other prestigious collections around the world.
This work is a playful revisiting of the classic Italian renaissance image of the harlequin. The references may be dated, but this work is alive and vibrant and modern!
