Alex Simeon Janvier (1935- ), Canadian

Janvier was born and lives in northern Alberta and is of Dene and Anishnaabe descent. He is best known for his remarkable and whimsical use of vivid colours and calligraphic, almost spider-like, lines to depict and transform the geography and culture of his Alberta home. Janvier is a member of what is commonly referred to as the "Indian Group of Seven" and is a pioneering Indigenous artist - influencing and inspiring generations of younger artists. His work was the subject of a major retrospective exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada in 2017. His work is regularly available at auctions and major galleries.
