Fragrance de Tendresse #1

Shelagh Keeley (1954 -), Canadian.

Photo transfer and gouache on paper, laid down on canvas.  Signed and dated 1998. Framed.

Shelagh Keeley was born in Oakville, Ontario in 1954 and currently lives and works in New York, USA and Toronto, Canada.  She was the subject of a solo exhibition at the Toronto Museum of Contemporary Art in 2020. Her work is in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada and the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, among many other prestigious collections around the world. Keeley won the Governor General's award for visual and media arts in 2017. Works of similar size, date and material have sold for over $2000 at auction.

Fragrance de Tendresse #1 is one of 14 works in the series exhibited originally at the Drabinsky Gallery in Toronto in 1998.   The work provides wide scope for interpretation but on first encounter shocks the viewer with the rough juxtaposition of an elegant if ephemeral shape suggesting the female form, with photographic images of a cracked and brutalized skull. This is an elegant and thought-provoking piece.
