Polychromée B
Alfred Pellan CC OQ RCA (1906-1988), Canadian.
Colour silkscreen. Signed, titled, dated 1972 and numbered 5/100. Framed.
Alfred Pellan was born in Quebec but spent two periods in the 1930s and then again in the early 1950's in Paris. There, he was exposed to new ideas about art such as Surrealism and Cubism that he would bring back with him to Quebec. Along with Emile Borduas and the Automatists, Pellan fought against what he perceived as the conservative tendancies in the Quebec art scene in the mid-century. He disagreed with Borduas however about the social role of art and argued that modern art should be accessible to a generalist audience. He is one of Canada's most important artists of the twentieth century and his work is held by the National Gallery of Canada. An edition of this print is owned by the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec
