Jesus Carlos de Vilallonga (Spanish-Canadian, 1927-2018)
Oil on masonite; signed lower right; titled verso.
Jesus Carlos de Vilallonga migrated between Montreal and Barcelona for much of his highly productive artistic life. From early struggles to make ends meet (painting sets for the National Ballet of Canada and watercolors of Westmount mansions for wealthy homeowners), de Villallonga developed a devoted following for his surrealist-inspired works. He has exhibited, or had his works acquired, by institutions such as the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal, the Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris, the Museo Nacional de Arte Contemporáneo in Madrid and many other prestigious collections. De Villallonga's work is regularly at auction or for sale in distinguished galleries at prices in the $1000-2000 range.
Condition note: very small chip to the lower right beneath the frame.
Provenance : acquired at auction by Bohaus Art; Dominion Gallery, Montreal - inventory marking verso.
